World Bee Day at The President
20 May 2026This World Bee Day, The President Hotel invites guests to slow down and experience honey in a more thoughtful way through a guided tea and honey tasting, paired with a specially curated Afternoon Tea menu.
Hosted in collaboration with honey curator Michael Hammond of The Honey Room, the experience explores a variety of single-origin honeys, each shaped by the unique floral ecosystems of the Cape. Guests will taste and compare delicate notes ranging from light and citrus-led to darker, more complex varieties, while discovering how honey reflects the landscapes bees forage within.
At the centre of this story is the Cape honey bee, a remarkable species native to the Western Cape. Smaller and darker in appearance than many other honey bees, the Cape honey bee plays an essential role in pollinating local plant life, including the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Their work supports ecosystems, agriculture and food production alike.
The menu has been designed to complement these flavours naturally. Fresh oysters are served with apple and mango salsa, finished with chilli and honey dressing. Honey glazed watermelon is paired with candied walnut and crisp carrot, while lamb croquettes arrive with cranberry and honey compote. Sweet touches include mini scones served warm with cream, lemon curd and a drizzle of fynbos honey.
Guests will also be introduced to propolis, a resin-like substance produced by bees using plant sap and botanical compounds gathered from trees and flowers. Used within the hive as a protective sealant, propolis has long been valued for its natural antibacterial and healing properties.
Served alongside a selection of carefully paired teas, the afternoon offers a slower look at one of nature’s most intricate processes. A moment to taste, learn and appreciate the small details often overlooked.
